License Plate Recognition (LPR) and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) get used interchangeably in casual conversation, but on a spec sheet they describe different levels of capability — and picking the wrong one is a common source of installer callbacks.
At its simplest, LPR describes a camera and lens combination tuned to capture a plate clearly enough for a human (or basic OCR) to read it back from recorded footage — right field of view, right shutter speed for a moving vehicle, and enough resolution on the plate area itself.
ANPR goes a step further: dedicated processing (on the camera, an NVR, or attached software) automatically extracts the plate text and matches it against a database in real time, enabling automated triggers — a gate opening, an allow/deny list, or an alert when a flagged plate appears.
If the goal is just having plate detail available for after-the-fact investigation, a well-specified LPR camera is usually sufficient and considerably cheaper. If the goal is automated access control or real-time alerting on specific vehicles, budget for a full ANPR system, including the software licensing that goes with it.
