Almost every IP camera spec sheet lists "AI analytics" now, but the term covers a wide range of actual capability. Knowing what's running on-camera versus what needs a compatible NVR helps set the right expectations with a customer.
The baseline feature: distinguishing a person or vehicle from a moving tree branch or a cat. This is what cuts down false motion alerts the most, and it's standard on most current-generation IP cameras, including Cortex's Essential AI tier.
More advanced tiers let an installer draw a virtual line or zone in the camera's field of view and trigger an alert only when a classified object crosses it — useful for a fence line or a stockroom door, and far less noisy than whole-frame motion detection.
Facial recognition and attribute search (clothing color, bag detection) are improving but still vary a lot in real-world accuracy depending on camera placement, lighting, and resolution. Set expectations with customers based on demoed performance on their actual site, not the spec sheet claim alone.
