Upgrading an Old Coax Camera System Without Rewiring

You can usually keep the cable and replace the ends. New 4-in-1 HD cameras and a hybrid DVR run over the RG59 that was pulled for the old system, which turns the most expensive part of a camera job, the wiring, into the part you already own.

The short answer: if your building has an older analog camera system, the coax cable feeding it can almost always carry high-definition video from modern cameras. You swap the cameras for 4-in-1 HD models, swap the recorder for a hybrid DVR, put fresh connectors on the cable ends, and keep every run in the wall. This guide is how to tell whether that applies to you and what to check before ordering.

How to tell what you have

Look at the back of the recorder. Round screw-on connectors (BNC) on a row of video inputs mean coax. A picture that looks like a 2005 webcam, with the resolution listed as D1, 960H or "700TVL", means analog. A separate plug-in power supply with a bundle of thin red and black leads means the cameras are powered over the same siamese cable as the video. That is the classic setup, and it is exactly what this upgrade is for.

If instead the recorder has a block of Ethernet ports and the cameras plug in with RJ45 connectors, you already have an IP system; this guide is not for you, and a newer NVR is the conversation to have.

What 4-in-1 means

HD-over-coax comes in three flavors that different manufacturers championed: AHD, TVI and CVI. A 4-in-1 camera outputs any of the three, plus old-style analog, and a hybrid DVR accepts all of them, usually auto-detecting per channel. In practice that means you do not have to know which format your recorder speaks, and you can replace cameras one at a time while the old ones keep working on the other channels. Cortex's 4-in-1 cameras and hybrid DVRs also accept IP cameras on spare channels, which leaves a door open for later.

Six things to check before you buy

  1. Cable type. RG59 siamese (video coax plus a power pair in one jacket) is the normal case and works well. RG6 works too. Cat5 with baluns on each end is common in older DIY installs; that also works for HD-over-coax with the right baluns, but tell us, because it changes the parts list.
  2. Cable condition. Cable that has been in a wet soffit for fifteen years, or chewed, or kinked hard at a corner, will give you a noisy picture at HD where it looked fine at analog resolution. Look at the ends and any exposed sections. A single bad run is cheaper to replace than to fight.
  3. Run lengths. HD-over-coax has distance limits, and they get shorter as resolution goes up: a run that carries 2MP cleanly may not carry 4K. Measure or estimate your longest run and tell us; we will pick a resolution that survives it rather than one that looks good on the box.
  4. Power. HD cameras with infrared or ColorMAX white light draw more than the old ones. Check the existing power supply's rating against the new cameras' draw, or plan on a new distributed power supply. Under-powered cameras produce the strangest, hardest-to-diagnose faults.
  5. Connectors. Put new compression BNC ends on every run you keep. It costs a few dollars per end and removes the single most common cause of a flickering channel.
  6. Recorder size. Buy one channel size up from what you need today. Going from four cameras to five on a 4-channel DVR means replacing the DVR; on an 8-channel it means adding a camera.

The upgrade, step by step

  1. Inventory: count cameras, note the longest run, photograph the recorder's back panel and the power supply label.
  2. Pick a resolution that fits your runs: 2MP for long runs and general coverage, 5MP for most properties, 8MP where runs are short and detail matters.
  3. Install the hybrid DVR and hard drive first. It will display the old cameras, so you lose nothing while you work.
  4. Replace cameras one at a time, re-terminating each cable end as you go, and confirm the picture on the DVR before moving to the next.
  5. Set retention and motion recording, and check every camera again after dark. Night is where a marginal cable or a weak power supply shows itself.

When rewiring is the better call

Be honest with yourself here. If you want 4K on long runs, if the cable is damaged in more than one place, if you want the on-camera AI analytics that come with IP models, or if you are opening walls anyway for another reason, a PoE system on new Cat6 is the cleaner job and you will not regret it. A hybrid DVR gives you a middle path: keep the coax cameras you have, and add IP cameras on new cable where you need them.
